Winder resident will compete in Miss Teen USA pageant

Jena Sims is heading off to college soon, but she has one huge hurdle to leap over before starting school.
Sims, aka Miss Teen Georgia, will compete in the Miss Teen USA pageant Friday night.
"I'm excited and anxious, I've been anticipating this for so long," said Sims, a Winder native, before she left for Pasadena, Calif., where the pageant will take place.
To prepare for her competitions, 18-year-old Sims really got into the healthy lifestyle, working out five days a week and "eating right" for the past two years on a diet of grilled meats, brown rice, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
For a girl who says she loves all things chocolate, this is no easy feat, but it's necessary because she refuses to succumb to the unhealthy lifestyle of crash dieting or starvation before a pageant.
"Eating disorders just mess you up," she said. "I've seen girls who crash diet or girls who are anorexic and they just don't know what they are doing to their bodies."
Sims has a "a big ole' support crew" coming to California, complete with her family, her boyfriend, Corey, her boyfriend's family, friends, family friends and many more.
After the Miss Teen USA pageant, Sims plans to attend Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., to study international business.
This year's Miss Teen USA winner is required to either live at home and attend school or be a full-time college student.
Sims' dream job, besides becoming Miss Teen USA, is to be an anchor for ESPN.
"I'm a huge sports fan," Sims said. "Any kind of sports."
She supports both the Braves and Yankees, Falcons and Colts, all UGA teams and her local Gwinnett Gladiators. So who's her favorite sports stud?
"Derek Jeter," she said. "He is so cute."
A graduate of Winder-Barrow High School, Sims was able to balance her many extracurricular activities with her schoolwork.
According to her favorite teacher, Matt Perry, Sims is a very authentic person who is always sweet and cheerful.
"She's such a good listener, and I think that's a lost art here in America," Perry said.
Perry first met Sims on a school trip to Europe, and had her for 10th grade honors literature and senior advanced English.
"She was a very good student," Perry said. "Exceptionally hard working, great work ethic ... she does whatever it takes to get the job done."
Perry said in his 12 years of teaching, he had never met anyone like Sims.
"Jena was an exotic creature at Winder-Barrow," he said. "It's a small school and a small town, and having her here was like having visiting royalty."
According to Jena's mom, Jennifer Sims, getting into pageants was all Jena's idea.
"She's always been a strong, Type-A personality and I've never been one to push," she said.
As a single mother, Jennifer Sims is devoted to serving her daughter's needs.
"I have a fab job as a mortgage broker and can work wherever and whenever," she said. "We're close and we understand each other. We know each others quirks and she knows to leave me alone at the end of the month."
What's Jena's best quality, according to her mother? "Patience. Oh my God, that child has more patience than any one I know and she did not get that from me," she said.
Patience is one thing Jena will need to get through the pageant, which is divided into three equal parts: the interview, bathing suit and evening wear. Sims said her competition is really tough, but she's trying to stay focused.
"I don't think about the other girls. You're only competing against yourself," Sims said. "I just want to have fun and leave it up to the judges. You never know what they're looking for. If they want a redhead, well, I obviously won't win."
Sims has a key beauty secret for pageants - butt glue. "It's a roll-on adhesive for swimsuit bottoms so they don't ride up on you during the competition," Sims explained. "Everybody should have it."
